Beginner Crochet Project

My favorite thing about this scrunchie is that it is a quick and useful crochet project. The first time I made this beginner crochet scrunchie it took me only 30min to work up so rest assured you will get the hang of this in no time. This crochet scrunchie is a one skein wonder project.

Because this is a beginner crochet scrunchie, I wanted to use an accessible yarn. Acrylic yarn fits the bill across the board. Soft? Durable? Washable? Check, check, check! Best of all, you can easily purchase acrylic yarn both online, and in the store.

This project is also good to use up that yarn stash, or to use up all those yarn scraps you have!

Since I didn’t want any gaps between the stitches in my crochet scrunchie I chose a slightly smaller hook than what’s recommended on the yarns label. My 4.0 mm hook gave me tight, and even stitches.

This project uses slip stitches, chains and double crochet to come together to make a beautiful crochet scrunchie.

Notes

  • This project is easy to customize. In this tutorial I will show you how to make a classic crochet scrunchie, but that doesn’t mean you have to make it exactly like me. You are able to add more rows, or add more stitches at any time. This scrunchie is an easy way to start your crochet journey, and learn how adding, or taking away different parts of a pattern to make it to your liking.
  • Ch 2 does as the first double crochet.
  • This pattern utilizes US crochet terminology.
Don’t forget to pin this for later!

Row 1: sl st onto hair tie. sc all around hair band. ( you want the sc to completely cover the hair tie, but not overlap) sl st into first stitch once all the way around.

Row 2: ch 2 and turn, into the same stitch as the ch 2, put a dc. Put two dc into every stitch. sl st into first stitch.

Repeat Row 2 until you love your scrunchie! (i go for 2 rows of dc for an extra ruffled scrunchie)
